Funding for Speakers and Special Events
The Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies offers co-sponsorship of guest speakers and other special events organized by Duke faculty staff, and/or students. Award amounts are in the $300-500 range for individual guest speakers, and in the $500-1,000 range for larger events such as conferences, workshops, cultural events, etc.
There is no set deadline; requests are reviewed and funds allocated till the budget for a particular year runs out.
Please note that for any proposed speaker who is not a US citizen or permanent resident, it will be necessary to make certain they have obtained the appropriate type of US visa before promises can be made to cover any expenses for them. They may require special letters of invitation to help them obtain a US visa (be aware this can take several months), and because there are few tax treaties with most Latin American/Caribbean, large amounts of taxes will be withheld from their honoraria payments. For assistance/ guidance on arrangements for international visitors, please consult with CLACS Associate Director Natalie Hartman at least 2 months in advance of the visit.
If you are interested in requesting co-sponsorship of a guest speaker or special event, please submit an application.
