Undergraduate Academic Programs
Minor in Brazilian and Global Portuguese
Students in these programs will acquire competency in spoken and written Portuguese, as well as familiarity with the literature and culture of Brazil and Portuguese speaking regions.In addition to Portuguese language classes taught on campus, Duke-approved courses taught in Portuguese in study abroad programs may also count towards your major or minor in Brazilian and Global Portuguese.
Duke in Brazil

This four-week, one-course summer program is designed to provide intensive Portuguese language instruction while exposing students to the reality of social issues in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.Students interact with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that engage on issues of civics, citizen’s rights, culture, and sustainable development. Students live with host families and make several excursions of cultural significance.
Research Funding
The DBI offers several grants for research travel, especially for proposals that align with its signature projects: social mobility and education, energy and environment, arts and curation, public health, race and culture.
Graduate Academic Programs
Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships (FLAS) in Brazilian Portuguese
Full-time graduate and professional school students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents may apply to study less- or least-commonly taught languages of the Americas in combination with Latin American and Caribbean area studies.

Duke Brazilian Association

The Duke Brazilian Association is a network of students and faculty from Brazil or interested in Brazil. It aims to foster a sense of community to all of the Brazilian students on campus, and create connections for those who wish to travel to Brazil. DBI also hope to shine a positive light onto Brazilian culture so that other students on campus can become familiar with our country.
