New York Times Journalist Simon Romero Visits Duke

In Fall 2016 CLACS hosted Simon Romero as the special guest for the Burning Issues in Latin America series.

While at Duke Mr. Romero participated in a public event, “A Conversation with Simon Romero” which was a conversation facilitated by CLACS Director, Ambassador Patrick Duddy. They discussed recent events in Brazil including the impeachment of former President Dilma Rouseff, Colombia’s peace referendum, the crisis in Venezuela, and other issues. Mr. Romero also visited various classes and met with faculty and students.

Simon Romero is an American journalist, born and raised in New Mexico and graduated with honors from Harvard College with a degree in History and Literature. He also studied for one year in the history department at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. Currently, Romero is the Brazil bureau chief for The New York Times (2011-present), based in Rio Janeiro. Romero covers Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. Romero was previously the paper’s Andean bureau chief, based in Caracas, Venezuela, from 2006 to 2011. He joined the Times in March 1999. Romero received the Maria Moors Cabot Prize for reporting on Latin America & the Caribbean in 2015. Previously, in 2014, he won the Robert Spiers Benjamin Award for best reporting in any medium on Latin America.
